What is Lehsunia?
Lehsunia is cat's eye, usually the chrysoberyl variety, known for a thin bright band of light that glides across the stone as it moves (chatoyancy). In Vedic astrology it is traditionally associated with Ketu.
Judge the eye
- The line should be sharp, straight and centred.
- It should stay distinct as you rock the stone.
- The "milk and honey" effect, where the line splits the stone into a lighter and a darker half under side light, is prized.
Chrysoberyl, quartz and glass
True cat's eye is chrysoberyl, which is hard and costlier. Quartz cat's eye is softer and cheaper, and glass imitations exist. Check that the listing names the material and, for valuable stones, ask for a laboratory report.
Cut and care
The stone is cut as a smooth dome (cabochon). A well-proportioned dome shows the eye best. Wipe with a soft cloth and keep it away from harsh chemicals.
