What is Manik?
Manik is ruby, the red variety of corundum. It is very hard (9 on the Mohs scale) and is one of the classic precious gems. In Vedic astrology it is traditionally associated with the Sun (Surya), the planet linked with vitality and authority.
How to judge quality
- Colour: a strong, even red. Natural rubies run from slightly pinkish to slightly purplish red.
- Clarity: fine silk-like inclusions are normal in a natural ruby; a perfectly clean stone at a low price is a reason to ask questions.
- Cut: good symmetry and polish spread the colour evenly.
- Weight: given in carat and ratti (1 ratti is roughly 0.91 carat).
Treatment and glass-filled rubies
Heating is common and accepted when it is declared. A separate and much lower-value product is the lead-glass filled ruby: cracks filled with glass to look cleaner. It is fragile and must always be stated. If a seller will not state the treatment, do not buy.
Origin
Burma (Myanmar), Mozambique and Thailand are among the better-known sources. Origin affects price, so ask for it and match it to the certificate.
Traditional wearing notes
Tradition suggests the ring finger, set in gold or copper, on a Sunday. Practices differ, and the right stone for a person is a question for an astrologer of your choice. No result is promised by wearing any gemstone.
