What is Neelam?
Neelam is blue sapphire, the blue variety of corundum. Colours range from soft cornflower to deep royal blue. In Vedic astrology it is traditionally associated with Saturn (Shani), the planet of discipline and patience.
What to look at
- Colour: a rich, even blue. Very dark stones can look black indoors; very pale stones can look grey.
- Origin: Kashmir, Burma (Myanmar) and Sri Lanka are the best-known sources and carry different premiums.
- Clarity: fine silk-like inclusions are normal in natural sapphire.
- Certificate: for a Neelam of value, a laboratory report is not optional.
Treatment: ask every time
Heating is common and widely accepted when declared. Fracture filling and diffusion treatment are lower in value and must always be stated. If the seller will not tell you the treatment status, do not buy.
