What is Pukhraj?
Pukhraj is yellow sapphire, a variety of corundum (the same mineral family as ruby and blue sapphire). Its colour runs from pale lemon to deep golden yellow. Sapphire is very hard (9 on the Mohs scale), so a well-cut stone stays smooth for years.
In Vedic astrology Pukhraj is traditionally associated with Jupiter (Guru), the planet linked with wisdom, learning and prosperity.
How to judge quality
- Colour: even, lively yellow. Avoid brownish, greyish or green-tinted stones.
- Clarity: tiny natural inclusions are normal. Long cracks reaching the surface weaken the stone.
- Cut: good symmetry and polish make the colour look even from every angle.
- Weight: given in carat and ratti. 1 ratti is roughly 0.91 carat.
Natural, heated and treated
